There was shock and praise in equal measures at the end of Monday’s meeting of Athlone Town Council when town clerk John Walsh announced he had presided over his final council meeting.

Kilcoyne disappointed with turnout for special meeting

Independent Castlebar town councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he was disappointed with the turn out of councillors for what he described as “one of the most important issues for this council to deal with” this week. The council this week held a special meeting to discuss and amend the Draft Anti Social Behaviour Strategy 2010-2014 for Castlebar. The meeting was attend by only five of the nine members for the majority of the meeting, with it taking place with only four members present for a period of time also. Those members present were Mayor Ger Deere, councillors Harry Barrett, Blackie Gavin, Therese Ruane, and Michael Kilcoyne. Independent councillor Frank Durcan left the meeting before it began in protest, after no prayer was said at its outset.

No Ballina housing for people with anti social behaviour orders

Ballina town councillor Johnny O’Malley has asked for the town council to look into putting an amendment on the new social housing allocation scheme to stop people with antisocial behaviour orders being eligible for housing supplied by the council in the future.

Questions raised by Kelly over funding to Ballina Chamber

Independent Ballina town councillor Mary Kelly raised a number of questions over the allocation of €20,000 worth of funding from the council’s coffers towards Ballina Chamber of Commerce for 2011. Cllr Kelly asked what the council would get for the large allocation of funding towards the Chamber and what influence the council would have on where the money was being spent.

Traffic plan reversal causes gridlock in chamber

The members of Ballina Town Council will have an item on the July agenda of the local authority to discuss the reversal of the traffic management plan in the town. The issue arose after Cllr Johnny O’Malley questioned how much money had been spent on the implementation of the second phase of the traffic plan when the members were considering the financial update on the councils spending up to the end of March this year.
